Dual & Concurrent Enrollment
From the Department of 7-12 Instructional Services:
9-12 Course Advancement Guidelines
During the course of high school, students may wish to take courses for advancement beyond traditional six or seven period day options. Students might select to take courses at the Community College or other approved schools for advancement. Courses taken through a community college will provide a student with college credit (transferable courses only). Students taking non-GGUSD courses for advancement will not be granted high school credits. Courses taken for advancement can provide students with the opportunity to advance in their math sequence or meet a-g requirements which are not also graduation requirements. Non-GGUSD courses must be approved both by the site (counselor and administrator) and the Department of 7-12 Instructional Services (Form #9802.110). Guidelines for approval are as follows:
MATH:
An advancement course cannot be taken concurrently with a prerequisite course. Algebra is a graduation requirement and must be taken on a high school campus if not completed in intermediate school. Because 3 years of math are required for graduation, requests for advancement will only be approved once a student has completed Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. For all requests, consideration will be given to previous math performance.
ELA:
Because 4 years of ELA are required for graduation, students may not take a non-GGUSD course in order to advance in their high school ELA sequence (i.e., skip a level of mandatory ELA) UNLESS they are ELD students who meet the ELA graduation requirements through ELD but desire to meet a-g requirements through ELA advancement.
WORLD LANGUAGES:
Because World Language is not currently a graduation requirement, students may choose to meet the "e" (Language Other Than English) requirement through enrollment in a non-GGUSD course. Most college courses (i.e., Spanish I, etc.) are the equivalent of two years of high school world language; check with the local college for applicability. For online courses, check that the program offers courses approved by the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) and appears on the "UC Doorways" approved course list. Courses that do not appear on this list will not meet the "e" requirement.
FINE ARTS:
As Fine/Applied Arts is a graduation requirement, students should be encouraged to select their high school fine arts courses to also meet the a-g requirements. However, students may choose to take community college courses to meet a-g requirements or online courses for enrichment. Note that online Visual and Performing Arts courses will not be approved for the "f" subject requirement for purposes of meeting the a-g requirements.
OTHER COURSES:
All other courses do not qualify a student for advancement in their course sequence, however, may be taken for enrichment.
UC-transferable Community College courses may earn an additional point of honors weighting as part of the UCOP-determined maximum of eight semesters (no more than 4 semesters in grade 10) of University-certified honors-level, Advanced Placement or college-level courses. Online courses may not qualify for the purposes of satisfying NCAA eligibility requirements.
