The La Quinta Debate Club is a member of the Southern California Urban Debate League (SCUDL). As such, we have taken members to tournaments around Southern California to engage in verbal sparring in the competitive arena of team policy debate. Participation in these tournaments not only allows students to expand their knowledge of the political issues facing society today, but also to hone many useful skills. As a part of the club, students improve their abilities to speak in public, think critically, and defend any perspective in any argument. Imagine the looks on your parents' faces when, the next time they ask you to do a chore, you give them an 8-minute speech on why it would be better for the whole family if your younger sibling did it for you. (OK, so maybe with some parents, those would be looks of deathly anger, but you get the message.) Additionally, La Quinta debate gives students the opportunity to become part of a successful organization whose members have received many awards and accommodations, and who sent a partnership (Greg Greene and Catherine Vu) to the California State Debate Championships just last season. And, finally, debate provides a wonderful chance for students to form lasting friendships with peers at LQ and from around the country.
We are always open to newcomers, and hope to see you at our next meeting!
