Description

English 1H is a rigorous standards-based curriculum designed to stimulate critical thinking through analysis of the language arts, including reading, writing, speaking, and interpersonal communication. In-depth exploration of literature and informational texts will expand understanding of literary techniques, such as plot, setting, point of view, themes, symbolism, etc., as well as literary criticism, diction and syntax. Representative core work selections are studied intensively. In addition, preparation for college writing is an essential element of this course. The writing for this course will include paragraphs, timed writes, and formal essays, with an integration of grammar and vocabulary. Focus will be placed on becoming effective communicators in a variety of writing domains. Students are expected to devote the time, energy, and effort needed to excel in an honors level course. Active student participation is an integral part of this course.
