Welcome to our Multilingual and Multicultural Department!

OUR GOAL AND PHILOSOPHY

We want to provide an active and engaging environment for our students, in which they are consistently immersed in the foreign language. In doing so, we support and guide our students through all levels of language learning, expecting our students to use as much of the target language as often as possible. By level three the target language is used exclusively by both teachers and students.
Our students learn about different cultures and ideas, and are encouraged to express their own opinions and viewpoints, in the foreign language, of course! While we stress communicative competence, we also strive to help our students become highly proficient readers and writers in the foreign language.

Every one of us deeply believes that learning different languages greatly enhances our and our students' lives. Our philosophy is reflected in the following quotes:

"A different language is a different vision of life." Federico Fellini, Italian film director

"No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive." Mohandas K. Gandhi, Indian nationalist and spiritual leader

"You live a new life for every new language you speak. If you know only one language, you live only once." (Czech proverb)

"The limits of my language are the limits of my world." Ludwig Wittgenstein

"Those who know no foreign language know nothing of their mother tongue." Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Here are some additional reasons to learn a foreign language:

* Studying a foreign language improves analytic and interpretive capacities, and can help increase performance in other classes, such as Math and English. [www.adfl.org].
* Better job opportunities
* Studying, working, or just traveling in another country becomes much easier and more fun!
* You can get in touch with your roots, your family's background.
