Summer School

GGUSD Summer School 2010

The Garden Grove Unified School District offers summer school classes
at designated high schools every summer.

Summer School is just around the corner. Our informational meeting is Thursday, March 18 at 7:30AM in the 200 Lyceum. Students who need to attend summer school will receive a letter invitation to bring home. Invitations will be handed to students, Monday, March 15.

This meeting will provide with you with dates, times, and location. You will also be required to fill out your child’s emergency card at that time. In the event that you are unable to attend, please call your child’s school and ask to speak to the Counselor at 714-663-6375.

Who Should Attend:
Failure Repeats
- Most summer school classes are designed for students who have failed core academic classes during the current or prior school year.  Classes in English, Math, Science, and History are offered to enable students to replace classes and credits they failed during the school year. Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to make up lost credits.

Enrichment – SAT and California High School Exit Exam preparation classes are offered to prepare students to take these exams.

Advancement - Geometry, health, driver education, art history, and beginning drama are offered to students who wish to take classes prior to the upcoming school year.

How to Enroll in Failure - Repeat Classes:

Pre-enrollment in Session I Classes - Counselors place students in the summer school classes they have failed.  Towards the end of April, teachers give the pre-enrollment paperwork to the student to take home. Parents confirm their student’s enrollment in Session I by completing the emergency information on the enrollment letter and returning it to the La Quinta counseling office. Completion of this paperwork enrolls the student in Session I of summer school.

Pre-enrollment in Session II Classes - Students who are in danger of failing a core academic class at the fourth quarter progress report will be pre-enrolled in a Session II class.  In the beginning of June, teachers give the enrollment paperwork to the student to take home. Parents confirm their student’s enrollment in Session II by completing the emergency information on the enrollment letter and returning it to the La Quinta counseling office. Completion of this paperwork enrolls the student in Session II only of summer school.  In the event the student fails the second semester class, he/she will be enrolled in the failed class and will begin on the first day of second session.

Late Enrollment in Session I or II Classes - If a parent did not complete the enrollment form but still wishes to enroll their student in a Session I class, the student must come to the summer school site on the first day of Session I to petition to enroll in a class.  If a parent would like their student to enroll in a Session II class, the student may come to the summer school site any time during Session I to enroll in a Session II class.

How to Enroll in Enrichment and Advancement Classes:
Students who would like to take these classes must pick up a form from the counseling office at the end of March.  Parents complete the enrollment form and return it to La Quinta counseling office. The student must attend the class on the first day of the assigned session to keep his/her space.

Expectations:
Students must attend class daily, do homework, study for exams, and participate in class.  One day of summer school (4 ½ hours) is equal to one week of regular school attendance.  Students will be dropped from summer school after three absences.  Students may also be dropped for misbehavior and lack of completing work.
