Special Classes and Programs Offered at La Quinta
La Quinta High School teachers follow the Curriculum Frameworks for California Public Schools established by the California Department of Education. Teachers also use the academic content standards adopted by the California State Board of Education.

Special Classes
Honors Classes
Honors classes provide an enriched, challenging, educational opportunity with extended content and additional workload for students intending to select advanced placement courses in higher grades.

Advanced Placement Classes
Advanced Placement classes provide motivated high school students with the opportunity to take college-level courses in a high school setting. Students who participate in the Advanced Placement program gain college-level skills. They may also earn college credit by achieving a passing score on an end-of-course AP exam. All semester grades in AP courses are weighted in students' grade point average.

Support Classes
Algebra 1 Support - Students who require additional help to strengthen their algebra skills may be enrolled in an algebra companion class in addition to their Algebra 1 class.

Special Academic Programs
Vietnamese - La Quinta is one of the two schools in the GGUSD that offers Vietnamese language instruction from level 1 to 4. Vietnamese is certified by the University of California as fulfilling the "e" requirement for admission.

Computer Graphics - La Quinta's computer graphics courses use technology to create visual communication. Creating and using color and images, video imaging, three-dimensional imaging, layout design, and presentation concepts are all topics studied in these classes. In addition, for 2007-08, animation will be offered in computer graphics for the first time.

GATE Orchestra - La Quinta's orchestra teacher directs the GGUSD GATE orchestra that meets after school. Orchestra students from throughout the district audition for places in this elite performing group.
AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination is designed to increase school wide learning and performance by reaching out to underserved students with average grade point averages. Academic support courses and services are offered to AVID students with the goal of leading to admission to a four-year university.

Five Levels of English Language Development - La Quinta offers five levels of English Language Development from Basics to ELD/English 1P. Students are initially placed into ELD based on their CELDT test scores and progress at least one level each school year. The sequence includes ELD Basis, Level A, B, C, and ELD/English 1P. Basics and level A students have a two-period block with a third course to develop vocabulary. Students in Level B and C have two ELD classes.
